10 ways to reduce cart abandonment
The sale is complete when the customer completes the checkout process. You can increase percentage wise the amount of customers who complete checkout. The information and overall feel that is provided during checkout, determines the decision the customers take to either decide to complete or drop the purchase. You can continuously provide them information during checkout to assure the safety and build confidence; the process is termed as customer assurance.
Cart abandonment rate is the most common problem in ecommerce. It is defined as the number of people who drop the purchase and don't complete the checkout process. According to surveys cart abandonment rate is found at a 65% average, that means if 100 people started to fill the cart only 35 completed the check out process and if the average purchase was $45 then the total revenue you have lost is $2925 per 100 people.
The cart abandonment rate depends on your checkout process. However if a few things are taken care of, you can lower the rate.
1. The cart and checkout should be bug free: That means there should not be any difficulty to pick the product and place items in the cart. To ensure maintenance from your end should include periodic checks.
2. Be competitive: The prices should be in competition with other products and websites. As there are so many websites providing the same products, the customer should have a better reason to buy it from your website.
3. Reduce the checkout process time: The checkout process should be kept as simple as possible, so that the customer has no second thoughts and does not feel that his time is not valued.
4. Process indicator: Adding a process indicator will help the customer to know what percentage or part of process he is through. The customer might otherwise drop the idea of buying at the last step thinking there is a lot left.
5. Build trust: Build the trust level with the customer, assure him about the privacy, if possible also have things like web chat, phone numbers and also provide them with the information about the security service used by you.
6. Display the certificate of assurance: Build trust with the customer by the displaying a security seal on the website. Don't place it in the corner of the web page but should be placed so that the customer can easily see that.
7. Payment methods: Offer multiple payment methods, if the customer has choices, he will not be hesitant.
8. Order over the phone option: Some customer's in spite of all might not be comfortable providing the information over the internet, give them a phone in option to place the order.
9. Be clear: Give them information about returns and shipping, so that they have no doubts in their mind.
10. No registration: Don't use a registration process for a checkout as the customer might think that you require too much of his personal information and also time.
These things cannot eliminate cart abandonment but can reduce them to a great extent.
